Look beyond the blank prompt
The best general assistant is the one that fits your actual materials and follow-up workflow. Compare file handling, web access, integrations, conversation controls, and how clearly uncertainty is communicated.
Match the generator to the deliverable
Creative exploration, legible typography, product-safe editing, and production licensing are different jobs. Judge prompt control, consistency across a series, masking and editing, export quality, and usage rights.
Separate generation from editing
Some products are strongest at creating short shots; others provide a fuller editor. Compare clip duration, camera control, character consistency, timeline tools, audio support, export resolution, and the cost of repeated attempts.
Name the audio job first
Speech generation, transcription, voice cleanup, and music creation need different systems. Check pronunciation control, editing workflow, language support, export formats, speaker consent, and commercial-use terms.
Choose an assistance boundary
Autocomplete, repository chat, command-running agents, and cloud app builders expose very different amounts of control. Evaluate codebase context, diffs, test feedback, terminal approvals, model choice, latency, and privacy controls.
Optimize for editing, not volume
A useful writing tool should preserve intent and make revision easier. Compare style controls, source handling, brand context, collaboration, originality checks, structured outputs, and how quickly a human can correct the draft.
Inspect the evidence trail
Web-answer engines and scholarly literature tools are not interchangeable. Judge source coverage, citation placement, quote fidelity, date filtering, paper discovery, extraction quality, and whether you can audit each important claim.
Start where work already lives
The value often comes from reducing handoffs between meetings, documents, and automations. Compare native integrations, permissions, trigger reliability, review steps, searchable history, and how data moves between services.
Keep verification in the loop
Natural-language analysis can accelerate exploration but should not hide transformations. Compare supported sources, generated code or query visibility, chart controls, reproducibility, row limits, governance, and human review.
Demand editable outputs
Fast generation matters less when every revision requires starting over. Compare layout quality, brand controls, component editability, team review, presentation modes, exports, and compatibility with the rest of your design stack.
Prefer tools that show the path
Learning products should encourage reasoning rather than only deliver answers. Compare scaffolding, curriculum fit, source grounding, teacher controls, age suitability, privacy, feedback quality, and accessibility.
Measure the operating outcome
Business AI should improve a defined funnel or service process, not merely produce more activity. Compare CRM fit, data quality, approvals, personalization controls, attribution, governance, and the total cost of maintaining the workflow.
